Globes with Dual Mapping Feature

Dual mapping is a popular, value-added feature of many of our illuminated blue ocean globes. The following globe models show physical features of the continents when not illuminated - deserts, forests etc. When lit, the countries and political boundaries become more apparent, with countries appearing in different colours:

Did you See....?

...the brilliant BBC documentary, The Seven Ages of Britain, presented by David Dimbleby, currently being repeated on BBC4 on Thursday nights at 7:30 p.m.?

Last night (30th September) it was "The Age of Power". This programme revealed the Tudor dynasty through some of the art treasures of the time. A major feature of the Elizabethan reign was the devotion of Elizabeth I's subjects to their Queen, to the extent that they were prepared to sail across the oceans to strange and distant lands to find new, exotic treasures to offer her as tokens of their devotion.

David Dimbleby talked about the famous British map maker, Emery Molyneux, who sailed with Drake on the first ever circumnavigation of the earth. On his return he made 2 globes for Queen Elizabeth, with beautifully-illustrated maps that revealed the very latest thinking at the time about what the world looked like.

In the programme, Dimbleby studies these globes in close up detail and explains how they were made using layers of paper glued together with plasterboard to make the sphere, then cutting the paper map like segments of an orange and glueing it around the sphere.

Did you Know....?

....that very little has changed today in the way that our traditional globes are made. Our spheres are made of fibreboard, which is pressed layers of paper, and the map is still cut into segments like the segments of an orange and glued to the sphere, making little score marks as they go to ease it around the curved surface of the sphere.

Wooden Globe Stands and Bases

I thought you might like to know that there are 4 types of wood used to make the bases and stands of our Replogle globes. These are:

Maple
Poplar
Mahogany (The Diplomat only)
Rubber wood

These are stained to achieve the different coloured finishes.

Replogle Globes, Inc., our leading globe manufacturer, has recently published information regarding its contribution towards energy and resource-efficiency.

With over 80 years of manufacturing experience, Replogle maintains a keen awareness of its responsibility to the environment. They are continuing to improve their energy and resource efficiency in the following areas of their business:

LEAN MANUFACTURING
Replogle Globes is working towards improving quality and reducing the carbon footprint of activities within their factory. It has reduced the amount of energy usage through the reduction of machines and materials transportation.

PAPER & FIBRE PRODUCT RECYCLING
Replogle allows outside companies to pick up their excess paper and fibre. In addition, they recycle approximately 5 imperial tons of paper and fibre materials each year.

PLASTIC RECYCLING
Replogle utilises some post-industrial reclaimed plastic in its manufacturing processes. The unused plastic is gathered from the manufacturing line and delivered to the in-house grinding room where the excess materials are reformed into pellets and redistributed to the machines.

PURCHASING
The Replogle purchasing department continues to source eco-conscious products for use in their daily production, office administration and maintenance departments. Currently all the 'press-craft' used in manufacturing the globe balls is made from post-consumer reclaimed paper fibre.

All in all, over 75% of the globes produced in the Replogle factory contain recyclyed or sustainable components.

In response to feedback from our shop retailers, we are very pleased to announce that we are launching two new FREE services from 1st April.

1. Free Point of Sale 'Key Cards'

A7 size and mounted on clear acrylic angled stands, our key cards contain 5 main features of the globe, adding value and informing your customers of the quality of the product they are buying, enabling them to a make more informed purchasing decision.

These key cards are worth £5.00 each and will be provided to retailers free of charge with their globe orders.

2. Free Illustrated Cartons

You will see from my last Blog post that many of our illuminated globes come in colourful boxes. We are now able to produce and apply an illustration to our globe models that have plain cartons. These also feature key information about the globe and are particularly suitable for those retailers wishing to display boxed items on the shop floor.

The clever, more modern design makes the Art 33 ideal for those who have always wanted a bar globe but perhaps don't have the space for some of the larger models in our range.
